Marlon Chito Vera won in a devastating fashion on Saturday.
Down two rounds to one, Chito ended the fight by knocking out former UFC Bantamweight Dominick Cruz via head kick in the fourth round, concluding the UFC San Diego card. Chito is on a 4 fight winning streak being the no. 7 guy in the Bantamweight division.
During the post fight press conference, Chito downplayed the difficulty of fighting the unorthodox style of Cruz when asked if there's anything that made him confused during the fight.
“Honestly, me and my team, we really think the way he fights is kind of very low level,” Vera said. “There’s no base, there’s no good stance, all that movement side to side — we told each other, ‘We have to kick this guy’s ass.’ But by saying that, you put a lot of pressure on yourself.
“I just believe that his style is not the best style for MMA. Maybe for boxing it can work better, but for MMA you’ve got way too many weapons going. What he does well, he mixes takedowns with that movement. That’s when he’s successful. But I was like, it’s going to be hard for him to take me down, so we were pretty confident, but we knew this fight wasn’t easy.”
Having a 24-4 record, Cruz is in search for third title, putting him as a future hall of famer. He became champion in WEC and UFC due his patented foot work that enabled him to evade shots from his opponent. He last challenged Herny Cejudo for the title at UFC 249 but lost via TKO.
Cruz claimed that the stoppage was too early blaming the referee Keith Peterson whom he allegedly accused of smelling like cigarettes and alcohol.
